One of the jewels of the museum
· A medieval
garden :
enchanting, evolving, lively and free to visit.
Situated in the middle of the medieval city,
the History and Art museum of Tulle is over the ruins of a former
Benedictine monastery.

Despite damage to the buildings, the arcades
of the monastery cloister still retain their remarkably
pure gothic influence and the 13th century
mural paintings have survived in the partially extant chapter
house.
Stone
sculptures and other architectural elements are displayed in the
medieval garden, created in 2000.
You can notice a lying statue of Abbot
Bernard de Ventadour (13th century), who directed the powerful
abbey at the time of its rebuilding in the gothic style, and la
vierge aux moinillons, typical of the 14th century sculpture
in Limousin.

In the South Gallery, you can see copies of Popes' lying statues,
from the Bas-Limousin : Clement VI, Innocent VI, Gregoire XI.
The West Gallery shows a famous collection of
taques (fireplace backplates).

The medieval garden

The ground floor rooms now provide exhibition
space for contemporary art.
Permanent collections are lodged on two floors. They are served
by medieval helical stone stairs.
